At last BlackBerry PlayBook has arrived on Uk shores. The BlackBerry PlayBook is a simple and user friendly tablet running the new BlackBerry Tablet OS that has been fully optimized and designed for touchscreen input. By looking at the screen, swiping, and just tapping around you’ll get a pretty good grasp of the tablet in no time.

BlackBerry PlayBook Setup

When you first turn on the BlackBerry® PlayBook tablet, you must complete the setup process. Plug the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet into a power outlet to ensure that you have enough power to complete the process.

To navigate during this process swipe right to left on the screen to continue to next screen. Tap back to return to a previous screen. Tap skip to skip an optional screen.

On the welcome screen you’ll be asked to connect to a wifi network. Either connect to a network manually or use wifi protected setup. You can also connect to an available Wi-Fi networks that are displayed on the screen.

You’ll want to update the date and time next. Easy to do. Select your Time Zone. Then enter current date and time.

The next step is to accept the BlackBerry End User Agreement. Once you accept the license agreement you continue to the next setup. If you do not accept the license agreement, the tablet turns off!!! So be sure to accept.

Create or sign in with a BlackBerry® ID. You can use a single email address and password to create a Blackberry ID and then can log in to any BlackBerry product that supports BlackBerry ID. To sign in to your BlackBerry ID account, type your BlackBerry ID login information. To create a BlackBerry ID account, tap Create a BlackBerry ID.

To ensure your PlayBook is running the latest software available, it will check for updates. If newer software is available then you can update it using this menu.

You do not need a BlackBerry Smartphone to use a BlackBerry PlayBook, but if you own a BlackBerry you can connect it to your PlayBook tablet via the BlackBerry Bridge. Connect your tablet to your BlackBerry smartphone to access email, calendars, BlackBerry Messenger files, and other data directly from your tablet. To set up BlackBerry Bridge, tap Setup.

Instead of using the power button you can simply swipe from bezel to bezel, either top to bottom or side to side. 

Standby Mode – To put your playbook in a standby mode, you can either tap the physical power button or simply put the PlayBook down and let it go into “Standby Time-out”. The default setting is 2 Minutes, but you can make it as low as 30 Seconds.

Full Power Off/ Reboot – Hold down on the power button for two seconds and you’ll get option to either Turn Off your device or Restart it. There’s also an icon on homescreen that does the same thing when tapped.

Restart a FROZEN/Locked-Up BlackBerry PlayBook – The BlackBerry PlayBook is a very stable device but if you ever do manage to freeze it up, you’re not totally out of luck. Simply hold down the power button for 10 to 15 seconds and the PlayBook will restart.

Also know as “pinch to zoom”, pinching is an easy way to zoom in and out of webpages, photos, documents and more. To pinch just touch the screen with your finger and thumb, then either drag together or apart to zoom our and in respectively.

To move and item from one place to another on the PlayBook you can simple drag it. No need to worry about copying and pasting as this can get the job done with ease. To move an item (photo, document etc.) from one place to another, touch and hold the item then drag to the new position.

To show the home screen (and thus minimize applications) on the PlayBook, swipe up from the bottom frame onto the screen.

When you’re within apps, you always need to remember the Swipe Down from the Top gesture as it will reveal important options.

When you are within apps, swiping diagonally from the top bezel to the screen will pull down the main status bar (the bar across the top of the homescreen that shows the time, orientation lock, settings gear, etc.).This is important as it allows you to lock the display from within any app. You don’t need to exit an app to lock the screen in portrait or landscape. With the status bar showing, you can also turn wifi on or off and bluetooth on or off, or pause/skip tracks if music is playing.

To close an app from the homescreen, simply touch the app and swipe up from the screen.

Tap and Hold for Menus, Cut & Paste – Similar to BlackBerry 6 on touchscreen phones, the BlackBerry Tablet OS utilizes the tap and hold gesture. Within the web browser, it’s important as it allows you to open links in a new tab or save an image. When word processing, it allows you to copy and paste text. 

Changing your PlayBook’s Wallpaper – Go to the Pictures app, pick the picture you want to set as a wallpaper, swipe down and choose the Set As Wallpaper option.

Take a Screen Capture – To capture an image of what’s on your PlayBook’s screen (at anytime), simply Press down on the PlayBook’s Volume Up and Volume Down buttons at the exact same time.

Password Protect your BlackBerry PlayBook – To set a password on your BlackBerry PlayBook, Go to Settings > Security > Password. Everytime your PlayBook’s display powers off you’ll need to re-enter your password.
