Nexus 7

Nexus 7 is google’s first own branded tablet built with a partnership with Asus. Nexus 7 features 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS HD display with 216ppi pixel density. The powerhouse of the device is tegra 3 quad core processor and 1.5GB RAM. Nexus 7 is the first and currently only device shipping with Google’s latest OS Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). Other main features include 1.2MP front facing camera, NFC technology and storage of 8GB or 16GB. Battery life on Nexus 7 is really impressive. Google promises 4325 mAh battery should provide upto 8 hrs of use. You can buy a Nexus 7 8GB for only $199 & 16GB will cost you $249. It will compete against the likes of Amazon Kindle Fire 2, BlackBerry PlayBook 4G and Apple’s iPad Mini.

Jelly Bean (Android 4.1)

Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) is the latest operating system and an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). While its not the quite revolutionary as from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich, it still marks an improvement for the ecosystem. The main feature coming to Jelly Bean is Project Butter. It will improve performance and response time in comparision to Ice Cream Sandwich. Animations are smoother and quicker. Other important feature debuted on Jelly Bean is Offline voice dictation. Now you can tap the microphone and dictate a message even when you are offline or on plane mode. Jelly Bean will be rolling out to Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Nexus S and Xoom devices in mid-july.

Overall, Google Nexus 7 is really impressive in terms of hardware and software. This can be Google’s real challenge to the dominance of Apple’s iPad in tablet industry. Update : Google Nexus 7 will cost £159 for 8GB & £199 for 16GB model in UK. Pricing is reasonable considering the impressive hardware (quad core tegra 3 processor). Nexus 7 will be available to buy from July 27, 2012 from all leading mobile operators.
