iPhone 5S is the latest flagship smartphone from Cupertino giant Apple featuring next generation iOS 7 operating system. It is world’s first smartphone to feature 64-bit desktop class architecture for blazing fast performance. In size, it is practically identical to iPhone 5 and measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm in dimensions and weighs 110g. The iPhone 5S is Apple’s first device to feature a Touch ID sensor, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your iPhone with just the touch of a finger. Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high resolution image of your fingerprint and intelligently analyze it to provide accurate readings from every angle. The sensor is 170 microns thin and scans sub-epidermal skin layers to recognize your fingerprint. The iPhone 5S features a 4-inch Super HD display. It is powered by A7 processor and 2GB RAM. In addition to that iPhone 5S comes with a new M7 motion coprocessor that measures motion data continuously with the help of accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. Developers can access new CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M7 to create even better fitness and activity apps. For multimedia, iPhone 5S packs an 8 Mega Pixel iSight camera at back with a larger f/2.2 aperture for better sensitivity and low light performance. It also includes a new True Tone flash, Burst mode (up to 10 frames per second), Slo-mo video supported at 120fps and a new FaceTime HD camera. For connectivity, it supports Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS and LTE mobile connections. There is still no NFC technology in the latest flagship smartphone. The iPhone 5S comes pre-installed with a newly designed Apple iOS 7. It is the seventh major update and the most radical overhaul in the user interface of iOS since it first launched back in 2007.

The iPhone 5S will come in three different colors – black, gold and silver and the SIM-free handset will be available in UK for £549 for the 16GB variant, £629 for the 32GB variant and £709 for the 64GB variant. The cases for iPhone 5S will be available in beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and red for suggested retail price of $39. The iPhone 5S will compete against other flagship smartphones like Sony Xperia Z1, LG G2, Moto X, HTC One, Nokia Lumia 1020, BlackBerry Z30 and Samsung Galaxy S4. It will be available to purchase in stores from September 20th. A new iPhone 4S 8GB model will also be available for free on a 2 year contract. Update : According to WSJ report, Apple’s new iPhone 5S, which features a fingerprint scanner, won’t store actual images of users’ fingerprints on the device. The ‘Touch ID’ system only stores “fingerprint data”, which remains encrypted within the iPhone’s processor. The iPhone 5S then uses the digital signature to unlock itself or make purchases in Apple’s iTunes, iBooks or App stores. Apple testers have found the device sometimes doesn’t work with sweaty hands.

Update : The European hacker association Chaos Computer Club claims that it has successfully hacked into Apple’s latest Touch ID scanner. The process requires a 2400 DPI picture of someone’s fingerprint from a glass surface, which is then laser printed at 1200 DPI and used to create a thin latex sheet that serves as the fake. If the claim is verified, it will be embarrassing for Apple as the company is betting big on the security of Touch ID system to differentiate from other flagship smartphones.

Update : Apple officially announced that it has sold a record breaking nine million new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C since September 20th. In addition more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7.

Update : A fake ad (pictured below) claims that Apple’s new iOS 7 makes your iPhone waterproof. It says, “In an emergency, a smart switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry”. This particular ad has circulated across several social media websites. I hope no one has believed in this hoax and if they did then good luck with your Apple Care warranty.

Update : According to AllThingsD report, apps on Apple’s latest flagship iPhone 5S appear to be crashing at twice the rate as on iPhone 5C or iPhone 5. In addition to that some users are experiencing Windows like ‘blue screen of death’ while working with iWorks suite.

Update : According to a new USA Today report, Apple has lost its magic touch with the new iOS 7 operating system. There are too many complaints from consumers regarding Apple’s latest operating system.

Update : Typo keyboard case is a new iPhone case that brings BlackBerry Q10 like keyboard to Apple’s iPhone 5/5S. In size, it measures 14.2 x 6.2 x 1mm and weighs 39g. The Typo case features a backlit keyboard for typing in low light environments and is connected to iPhone via Bluetooth 3.0. It is powered by a 180mAh battery that can be fully charged within an hour. The Typo keyboard case will get an official launch at CES 2014. It is now available for pre-order from http://typokeyboards.com for $99.

Update : BlackBerry has filed a lawsuit against Typo Products LLC alleging that Typo has blatantly copied BlackBerry’s keyboard design with its iPhone keyboard case which is designed to slip on to iPhone devices. Typo, founded by entrepreneur Laurence Hallier and TV host Ryan Seacrest, announced that Typo keyboard would be available for pre-order later this month.

“This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design. From the beginning, BlackBerry has always focused on offering an exceptional typing experience that combines a great design with ergonomic excellence. We are flattered by the desire to graft our keyboard onto other smartphones, but we will not tolerate such activity without fair compensation for using our intellectual property and our technological innovations,” said Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry’s General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer.

Update : The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation has filed a lawsuit on behalf of University of Wisconsin alleging that Apple’s flagship A7 processor has violated its 5,781,752 patent known as ‘Table based data speculation circuit for parallel processing computer’. The patent technology is described as follows:

A predictor circuit permits advanced execution of instructions depending for their data on previous instructions by predicting such dependencies based on previous mis-speculations detected at the final stages of processing. Synchronization of dependent instructions is provided by a table creating entries for each instance of potential dependency. Table entries are created and deleted dynamically to limit total memory requirements.

“WARF is informed and believes, and on this basis alleges, that the acts of infringement by Defendant have been, and continue to be, willful, intentional, and in conscious disregard of WARF’s rights in the ‘752 patent,” the court filing said.

Update : According to a new Defense news report, the US Air Force is replacing 5,000 of its legacy BlackBerry devices with Apple smartphones. “In order to keep costs down and save on network resources, BlackBerrys will be turned in and shut off once the user is transitioned to an iOS devices,” Brig. Gen. Kevin Wooton said in a statement. “The pilot tests we have run have shown positive results with the user communities,” Wooton said. “However, we’ve only scratched the surface. As the number of users grows, we’re confident our airmen will find new and innovative ways to enhance operations and job effectiveness.”

Update : According to a new Guardian report, a major flaw in Apple software for mobile devices could allow hackers to intercept email and other communications that are meant to be encrypted. “It’s as bad as you could imagine, that’s all I can say,” said Johns Hopkins University cryptography professor Matthew Green. I hope US Air Force has thought into this before swapping BlackBerry smartphones for Apple’s iPhones.

Update : According to a new WSJ report, iPhone owners are loyal despite iOS glitches. In a new survey of 3000 people compiled by Statista, 78% are happy with iOS platform and will likely upgrade to iOS device in future.

Update : According to Bloomberg, BlackBerry has won a court order banning Typo Products LLC from selling a $99 iPhone case after convincing judge that Typo has infringed it’s keyboard patents. U.S. District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco said in a ruling today that BlackBerry is likely to prevail on its infringement claims and that Typo hasn’t made a strong challenge to the validity of the smartphone maker’s patents.
