Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 8 (also know as Apollo) is the latest mobile operating system from Redmond giant Microsoft. WP8 will be based on Windows 8 and RT operating systems. This will help developers to develop and improve user experience across the overall Windows ecosystem. Microsoft will be hoping that it is third time lucky after getting mixed reviews for Windows Phone 7 and 7.5. OEM partners are also excited about the new Windows Phone 8 and wants it to succeed to compete against the dominance of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.

Microsoft is updating the Start screen on new Windows Phone 8. There will be more customisation options with new theme colors and new styles for live tiles. The new small tiles are four times smaller than the ones in Windows Phone 7 and can still display information. Windows Phones 8 users will be able to access more information at a glance, merging widgets with the icons. Microsoft is also improving display resolution in its next generation Windows Phone 8. WP8 smartphones will feature displays with resolution of 1280×768 and 1280×720 pixels in addition to its existing 800×480 display. There is also support for new graphics feature using multi-core GPUs. Windows Phone 8 will also support NFC technology for the first time. Tap to pay feature is designed for users to use their phone as a digital wallet.

Microsoft wallet is an app that let’s users to use credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards and even NFC tap to pay for all kinds of transaction. For social communication, Skype and VOIP calls are deeply integrated into Windows Phone 8. WP8 will handle incoming calls and messages over VOIP like the traditional phone calls.

For navigation, Windows Phone 8 will use Nokia’s mapping technology called Nokia Drive. New WP8 will also support offline maps and turn-by-turn directions. Nokia Drive will even have live tiles on the home screen that will show live directions. You don’t even need to tap into app to get the directions. With Internet Explorer 10, web browsing has been significantly improved on Windows Platform. Browser is fast and secure with the phishing filter and SmartScreen application that helps users from malware and malicious websites. For productivity, Windows phone 8 will be launched with Office 2013. It will also come with an added cloud functionality. All the recently used office files will be backed up to the cloud and are therefore available for access and editing anywhere you go. If you have a favourite template, you can pin that to the start place, and Office will put it across all devices so you always have that template available to you. All these settings are stored in the cloud with SkyDrive, SharePoint and your local drive and will be available for you anytime.

On availability of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft have officially announced the launch for October 26. Nokia Lumia Phi and HTC Zenith and Samsung Odyssey will be the first flagship smartphones that will run new Windows Phone 8 operating system. Update : According to a leaked image (pictured below), Microsoft’s next software update Windows Phone 8.1 will come with a dedicated notifications center. The new software is expected to launch during Q4 of 2013.
